Dubai airport spreads across three terminals and the distances can surprise people. Terminal 3 is the largest by far and splits into three concourses linked by walkways and a short train. Terminal 1 sits nearby and connects airside with Terminal 3 so most transfers stay inside the secure area. Terminal 2 sits further away across the airfield and needs a shuttle bus, so build in extra time if your flights involve that one.
For a connection the transfer security lines usually move steadily once you follow the purple or green signs. Have your boarding pass ready and keep liquids under the usual limits. Early morning and late night waves can create short queues but the process is generally smoother than many big hubs.
Prayer rooms are easy to find in every terminal and concourse. They stay open all hours with separate sections and washing facilities nearby. Signs point the way from the main corridors so you do not have to search long.
When the layover stretches past a few hours look for the quieter seating zones away from the busiest gates. Some areas have reclining chairs that make a short rest possible. Paid sleep pods and an airside hotel inside Terminal 3 offer more privacy if you need real sleep. Free showers exist in parts of Terminal 3 between certain gates, while other spots charge a small fee and supply towels.
If you have several hours and stay airside you can wander the shops, grab a meal, or simply sit near the big windows watching the activity on the tarmac. Leaving the airport for a city visit only makes sense with a much longer stop and the right visa situation. Keep an eye on the departure screens because gates can shift, and head toward your next flight with at least forty minutes to spare. A bottle of water and a light snack from your bag help more than you expect during the wait.
