A short-stay Schengen visa lets you visit any of the member countries for up to ninety days within a one-hundred-eighty-day period. It covers tourism, family visits or short business trips. First-time applicants need to show clear plans and strong reasons to return home.

Apply at the consulate or visa centre of the country that is your main destination. If the time spent is roughly equal, choose the country of first entry. Submit the application no earlier than six months and no later than fifteen days before travel. The form must be filled completely and signed.

Your passport needs to be valid for at least three months after the planned exit date from the Schengen area, issued within the last ten years, and contain at least two blank pages. Add a recent photo that meets the standard size and quality rules. Travel medical insurance is mandatory and must cover at least thirty thousand euros for emergency care, hospital stays and repatriation across the whole Schengen zone for the full length of your stay.

Supporting documents usually include a confirmed flight itinerary showing entry and exit, proof of accommodation such as hotel bookings or an invitation letter from a host, and evidence of enough money for the trip. Bank statements from recent months work well. A letter from your employer or proof of studies and family ties at home helps show you will leave on time. Keep copies of everything.

Airport transit is different. Many nationalities can change planes in the international area without a visa, but some need an airport transit visa if they leave the plane or change terminals. Check the exact rules for your passport before booking a connection that involves leaving the airside zone.

Common reasons first applications get refused are incomplete paperwork, unclear travel purpose or weak proof of return. Double-check every document matches the dates on your itinerary and submit only clear originals or certified copies as required. Once approved the visa sticker goes into the passport and you can travel freely inside the area for the allowed period.
