The Visa Waiver Program lets citizens of certain countries visit the United States for tourism or business without a traditional visa. Stays are limited to ninety days. To use it you must first get an approved ESTA, the electronic travel authorization.

Only nationals of the designated VWP countries qualify. The list covers most of Western Europe plus places like Australia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand and a few others. You also need a valid e-passport that contains the electronic chip and is machine-readable. Every traveller including infants needs their own ESTA.

Apply online well before your trip. The form asks for passport details, personal information and a set of yes-or-no eligibility questions about health, criminal history and previous immigration issues. Pay the fee, currently around forty dollars, and wait for the response. Approval is usually quick but can take up to seventy-two hours. The authorization lasts two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and covers multiple short trips.

An approved ESTA does not guarantee entry. The final decision sits with the officer at the port of entry. You still need to show a return or onward ticket and prove you intend to leave within ninety days.

Common mistakes that lead to refusal include typing the passport number wrong, using an old or non-electronic passport, or answering the eligibility questions carelessly. Previous overstays, certain criminal records or travel to restricted countries after specific dates can also block approval or entry. Treating the ESTA like a multi-year visa and staying longer than ninety days is another frequent error that causes future problems.

Double-check every field on the application against your passport and keep a copy of the approval. Arrive with your return plans clear and you will move through the process more smoothly.
